There is a peculiarity in the grouping (and groping) of a certain number of similar objects. Why does the collector feel the desire to acquire objects in lots? How many things does it take to make a proper collection? What is the property of the thing that allows an objects inclusion into the club? Is it a likeness of material, of branding, crafted by the same hand, or a similarity in style? Can the collector create the things in the collection? These and many other questions will arise as this collection of collections is presented. Colquitt has invited over 40 collectors to exhibit their strange and beautiful things. Some of the collections so far...potted meat, crochet poodles, homeless signs, hand-built model train bridges, found Polaroids, polka dot polyester shirts, victorian cup and toothbrush racks, postcards, carved stone books, gerbil-chewed wood bits, insect parts in vials with small photos of insect parts in other vials, plastic fins from inside a cloths-dryer drum, poems found in thrift-store typewriters, hairballs, pig head shampoo bottlecaps, inventor's follies, small sculptures of hands shootin-the-bird, hand-made fetish dolls, suburban ceramic pigs, "I used to live there" photos, hand-written paper lists of future vinyl purchases, Thai flashlights that look like fake cameras, bastardized mass-produced screws n nails, chess variations, computer tech vs. customer dialogues, blue-jean thongs, passport photos, grievances, seed pods, phunny phound photos, European children's mittens, burned cowboy boots, camp, prison and tattoo hearts, west texas relics, gimmie-caps found on american highways, vests fashioned from bath mats, found slides, wooden crutches, "have you seen me" inserts of lost children, tiny xeroxes of spiral shaped buildings, string balls, mugs that say "BILL", medical journals, dildos, paintings of amplifier tubes, press passes, truck stop candies, smurfs, bunny caps, newspaper clippings, stretchy fabric with words on it, carved hand peace signs, juice can stools, four-eyed figurines, dental relics, miniature animal heads on plaques, unicorns and dead boyfriends, 300 mona lisas, stapled ceramic plates, dreamscicles, ... |
